Zen Humor

This Made Me Laugh A senior teacher at a temple is teaching the monks when an earthquake hits.  The teacher calmly gathers the panicking students and takes them to the kitchen, which is the strongest room in the building.  When the earthquake stops, the teacher has a drink and says to the class:  "Here you se the benefit of Zen training.  While you students panicked, I was able to act logically and even enjoy a glass of water afterwards." Student: "Teacher, that would be a convincing example... read more

Zen - A Path to Happiness

I previously wrote about suffering, craving, and what happiness really was. IMO, Zen is a path to this natural state of happiness. Zen is also one of the spiritual paths that I did LOTS of exploration on when I moved away from being agnostic. Zen became a spiritual path that incredibly near and dear to my heart. So, today I will share some background on what Zen is about. Zen : The religion of no religion. There is no personal savior. The universe is one substance, a whole of which man is...

Zen humor

So last night the all-day sitting begins, and everyone sits very intently and still for a couple of hours. The neighbors, though, are having a party, and they're yelling, screaming with laughter, and playing loud Latin music from a stereo that I suspect is sitting on their front porch. The sitting ends, and I go to my room. These are earnest practitioners here at Casa Zen, though, and so some of them return to their seats in the zendo for more meditation. Right around then, the drum circle kicks...

Originally published at Civin.org . Please leave any comments there. Ok.. if you know me.. you know my mother’s love for plants has not passed onto me.. If anything a burning rage and hatred of plants has come into my life… (ok .. this really only applies to the 600 some I need to help move in and out of the house every year but I like to joke that I’d burn them all…) So.. when I found this I couldn’t help but laugh (I’m far too afraid to show it to my mother though as I’m sure it would...

MY moment(s) of zen...

Many people go to great lengths to make their lives into a drama. Why then is it odd that I should choose to make my life into a sitcom? Have a self-deprecating sense of humor. That way, you will always have at least one poor fool to laugh at. It is amazing how you are not useful until you realize that you are useless. Work with your hands. Money is fleeting, and power changes people. Hard callouses, tired eyes, heavy limbs, and sore muscles are more fulfilling than the heaviest purse...
